Phil Foden set to miss Euro 2020 final after picking up ‘minor injury’
Phil Foden is likely to miss the Euro 2020 final after picking up a minor injury.
England confirmed earlier in the day that the midfielder played no part in the final training session on Saturday as a precaution due to a knock.
But the blow is expected to be enough to rule him out of action for the glamour match with Italy on Sunday night.
England are playing in their first major final for 55 years, having secured their place with victory over Denmark in the semi-final last week.
Foden, 21, has impressed in his three European Championship appearances so far.
He started England's opening group games against Croatia and Scotland, and came on as a substitute in the 2-1 semi-final win over on Wednesday.
England wrote on Twitter earlier on Saturday: "25 players are out at training this morning as the Three Lions get ready for Italy, with Phil Foden sitting out due to a minor knock."
Manager Gareth Southgate has no shortage of options on the right side of England's attack where Foden usually plays, with several players competing for the spot including Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho.
Foden dyed his hair blond for the Euros and was attempting to get his team-mates to do the same if England go all the way and win the tournament.
But he reckons some of them won't have the bottle to do it and the Manchester City ace said: "I've told them, but I'm feeling they are not going to do it.
Is Phil Foden's injury going to prove costly for England? Let us know in the comments section.
"We've still got a tough final to win. If we win I'd like to think they'd stick to their word, but we'll see."
England have ridden to the final on a huge wave of confidence after remaining unbeaten since the start and conceding just one goal.
Foden wants his Three Lions to keep being themselves in a bid to become legends and icons of the sport.
He added: "There are going to be so many emotions with the fans. The players have to stay focused and treat it like the first game of the tournament.
"Don't change anything, because we've been brilliant in every game. Hopefully we can get it over the line. It would be my proudest moment, because nothing can beat winning with your national team."
