PGMOL urged to change law after ‘disgraceful’ decision during Arsenal win
The PGMOL have been urged to change the law following Takehiro Tomiyasu’s sending off against Crystal Palace on Monday. The Arsenal star received two yellow cards in the second half of the Premier League clash but former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy was not happy with the decision.
Arteta comments on Tomiyasu dismissal for Arsenal
Tomiyasu became the first Arsenal player to be sent off in over 15 months at Selhurst Park. His first yellow was for time wasting after the Gunners took an age to take a throw-in.
It wasn’t long before Tomiyasu was given his marching orders. David Coote adjudged the Japanese defender to have pulled Jordan Ayew back when he attempted to counterattack.
Replays showed the contact was minimal but Coote had no hesitation in brandishing the second yellow. Cundy believes the wrong call was made but VAR are unable to intervene on yellow card decisions.
The talkSPORT pundit says PGMOL must change the law to allow VAR to overturn such instances. Cundy fumed: “The Tomiyasu yellow card is an absolute disgrace – the second yellow.

“It’s an absolute disgrace. The second one, Jordan Ayew goes down looking for it. He doesn’t even touch him!
“I don’t think that Arsenal can actually appeal that as it was a second yellow. If there is any common sense, that yellow card should be overturned – if there’s any common sense in the game.”
Tomiyasu was perhaps unlucky to receive his first yellow, too. His team-mate Kai Havertz held the ball much longer than Tomiyasu did before the throw-in was taken, which led to a frosty reaction in Mikel Arteta’s post-match interview.
Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara had sympathy for Tomiyasu. He said: “The first one is harsh, Kai Havertz holds the ball on the side for 15 seconds, he then throws it to Tomiyasu.

Arsenal’s new kit for 2023/2024 is a stylish twist on a classic as it reinvents that mid-1990s vibe. A truly modern-looking shirt with a homage to the past, the Nike kit also includes a nod to the club’s iconic Invincible’s side in the finer details while catching the eye with the lightning bolt motif
“Tomiyasu takes it, he only holds the ball and he’s actually genuinely looking to throw the ball to someone. He holds it for eight seconds, he gets booked.”
Cundy, though, felt the officials got that decision right. He replied: “So what about then if Tomiyasu throws the ball to someone else? I think that was just the referee saying, ‘You know what, Arsenal are taking the you know what here’.
“So even though he’s unlucky to get booked, actually, 25-30 seconds to take a throw-in? Is that what we are saying is acceptable? It’s not, is it?
“So I think that booking – even though it’s harsh on Tomiyasu – I can understand the booking.”
