BT Sport viewers were stunned to learn they'd ditched Peter Walton in favour of Mark Clattenburg for Manchester City vs Arsenal.

Walton has been the broadcaster's go-to analyst for officiating decisions for years, whether it be during a game or when discussing them post-match. So it was a surprise when Clattenburg was brought in to give his opinion after Kevin De Bruyne's early opener for City at the Etihad.

Taking to Twitter, one fan exclaimed: "They ditched Peter Walton!" A second questioned: "Mark Clattenburg?! Where Peter Walton." While a third wrote: "Excuse me, where is Peter Walton."

With Walton being a divisive figure amongst footy fans, many were happy to not hear him for a change. One commented: "They’ve got Clatts in to do Peter Walton’s job? I apologise I misunderstood your game BT Sport."

"BT Sport have sacked off Peter Walton for Clattenburg. Best news of the week," argued one. Another echoed: "Peter Walton has been binned off BT? Great news."

And one chuckled: "BT Sport have f***ed Peter Walton off in favour of Mark Clattenburg for the biggest game of the season."

Walton was also missing for BT's coverage of City's Champions League quarter-final second leg away at Bayern Munich last week.

As commentator Darren Fletcher cut to him, he spoke but appeared to be on the phone to someone else and was subsequently cut off.

Clattenburg didn't endear himself to viewers after referee Michael Oliver saw nothing wrong with the build-up to De Bruyne's goal inside seven minutes. His comment of “it’s about getting the big decisions correct” was slammed for being an obvious statement.
