Peter Schmeichel fumes at "really big mistake" as England penalty downs Denmark
Peter Schmeichel, dad to Denmarks’ shot-stopper Kasper, was left fuming with a “really big mistake” in the decision to give England a penalty.
Harry Kane’s strike after being denied from the spot was the winner for the Three Lions in a 2-1 extra-time victory to reach the Euro 2020 final against Italy on July 11.
With Mikkel Damsgaard’s free kick and Simon Kjaer’s own goal making it level at 90 minutes, a run from Raheem Sterling on the right-wing saw him go down from a challenge by Joakim Maehle.
Referee Danny Makkelie pointed to the spot – and a quick VAR review stuck with the original decision, leading to the England captain’s winning moment.
Pundits have since questioned whether the penalty should have been given, with Ian Wright calling it “soft” on ITV and Gary Neville says there was “not a chance” it should have stood on Sky Sports News .
And Schmeichel, who won Euro 1992 between the posts for Denmark amid a glittering career at Manchester United to inspire son Kasper, does not think the spot-kick should have been given.

Speaking on beIN SPORTS, the Dane said: “He made a really big mistake on the penalty and this will be debated for a long, long time. It's a hard one to take because it's not a penalty.
“I would have been much more relaxed and acceptable if they had scored one of the many chances that they created, but unfortunately, the referee made a big mistake in my opinion.
“I know in your opinion [points at other pundits in the studio] and everyone's opinion, my phone has not stopped going off, everyone else is saying it's not a penalty so I'm quite sure that I'm [right in saying that].”

England manager Gareth Southgate, who has guided his country to their first major tournament final for 55 years, remained coy about the penalty.
When asked about the incident in his post-match interview, the Three Lions boss said: “I honestly haven't seen it again, but I thought Raheem was a constant thorn in their side, there were a couple of close calls in that regard.”
