Peter Crouch boasts a football CV that could inflate any ego, but the former England striker’s wife, Abbey Clancy, has revealed her hand in keeping him humble ahead of their 10th wedding anniversary.
Having spent the vast majority of his playing days in the Premier League, Crouch represented the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Stoke City during a professional career spanning 19 years.
However, the gravity of those accomplishments never made an impact on model wife Abbey, 35, who spoke about the relationship.
Crouch, 40, would even receive confused calls in the minutes before matches as Clancy told Mirror: “I’d call him at five to three and I’m like, ‘Where are you? Why aren’t you answering your phone?’
“And he’s like, ‘I’m just about to go on the pitch.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, sorry.’
“The only thing I like is penalties. It’s surprising we’ve lasted so long.”
The couple were wed on June 30, 2011, and have four children together: two daughters (Sophia Ruby and Liberty Rose) and two sons (Johnny and Jack).
Crouch scored 22 times in 42 appearances for England, but the 6’7” former frontman was more famed for his exploits at club level.
He’s one of just 29 players to have scored 100 goals in the Premier League (108 in total). Not only that, but he’s one of only two to have done so representing seven different top-flight teams, with former Newcastle and Manchester United striker Andy Cole being the other.
Crouch continued to say he “absolutely loves” his wife’s lack of awareness regarding his on-field exploits, with home life providing a welcome distraction from the job.
He explained: “I’d come home from football and Ab would change the subject the minute I walked through the door. If I’d played a good game or a bad game, it was gone.
“It’s nice to be able to relax at home –straight away it’s about the kids, what they’ve done, Ab’s day… She doesn’t even ask me what the score is or if I’d played good or bad.”
The dynamic clearly worked for both halves of the couple, too, as Clancy added: “He’s just scored a hat-trick and I’m like, ‘You’re late for dinner!’”

Crouch has always been honest in his gratitude for being married to a beauty like Clancy.
The former Portsmouth and Southampton forward was once asked what he’d be if he weren't a footballer during a 2010 appearance on The Graham Norton Show and replied: “A virgin.”
Clancy and Crouch have expanded their business empire in recent years, and the latter has found major success with That Peter Crouch Podcast, currently in its fifth series.
