A group of Peruvian shamans have performed a ‘victory ceremony’ to help their national team qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
Peru, who are 22nd in the FIFA world rankings, face Australia on Monday night in the AFC-CONMEBOL Inter-Confederation Playoff Final with a place in Qatar on the line.
The shamans conducted the ritual with pictures of the national team present and claim that they have seen that ‘Peru will be in Qatar’.

The shamans conducted rituals involving smoke, flowers and music to help their side
Shaman Walter Alarcon said: ‘We have carried out a Peruvian victory ceremony. We have summoned all the shamans at a national level.
‘There are 13 shamans because Peru plays Australia on the 13 June, and we have foreseen Peru passing to the next round.
‘Peru will be in Qatar for the World Cup because we have seen people’s joy, after taking ayahuasca plants.’
They also had a picture of the Australian national team that they poked with swords, as one of the indigenous shamans blew a traditional wind instrument known as a pututo.

Ayahuasca is a hallucinogenic brew used as ceremonial spiritual medicine by shamans in the Amazon for centuries.

Peru took part in their first World Cup for 36 years at the most recent tournament in 2018 – where there only group stage win came as a 2-0 victory over upcoming opponents Australia.
