Pep Guardiola raises Man City fears before Newcastle match as flight cancelled

Pep Guardiola reviews Man City's win against Nottingham Forest

Pep Guardiola has voiced fears that City’s high flying start could be grounded by four days of gruelling bus journeys. City play Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup on Tyneside on Wednesday night but have been denied a quick exit back to Manchester by train or plane on account of the late hour.

Instead they face a potentially long coach trip back to the Etihad arriving back at 2am before setting off for their Saturday fixture against Wolves by the same method the following day.

“After the game we cannot come back by plane because of a problem – something for the planes,” said Guardiola.

“We don’t have a plane to travel back so we have to take a bus and it’s two or three hours later that we will arrive here – so, so late arriving on Thursday.

“On Friday we travel to Wolves then we go to Germany to play Leipzig in the Champions League next week. So that’s what you have to think about.”

City have made a perfect start to their season winning eight games out of eight as they defend last season’s treble. But a gruelling schedule of games in multiple competitions has Guardiola admitting his training sessions have been limited to as little as five-minute sessions.

And it will mean he will field some second string options at St James’s Park on Wednesday night. “With recovery time we are on 5-10 minutes training session – that’s all,” he said. “You cannot train. It’s an exceptional situation in that we have a lot of players injured or with a lot of minutes so they have to rest.

“Wolves, Leipzig and Arsenal is much more important and that’s why you will see the guys who didn’t play much. We’ll travel there to win the game but I have to consider a lot of effort in this period and if they’re going to get injured again we’ll be in trouble.”
