Pep Guardiola addresses Man City future after treble win – ‘The job is done’
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola reviews Inter Milan game
Pep Guardiola has poured cold water on speculation that he could leave Manchester City after winning the treble. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss is tentatively looking ahead to next season already, despite admitting that his work at the Etihad Stadium is effectively done.
Champions League glory was the only missing piece in the jigsaw since Guardiola took the reins at City back in 2016. A 1-0 victory over Inter Milan in Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium on Saturday was therefore celebrated wildly by the Sky Blues, who matched Manchester United’s treble accomplishment of 1999 by reaching the European pinnacle in the same season as winning the Premier League and FA Cup.
Hoovering up everything in sight last campaign, with the exception of the Carabao Cup, has got fans talking about whether Guardiola could bow out on a high, despite being bound to a contract until 2025.
Despite the 52-year-old acknowledging that a Champions League win means he has accomplished all there is to accomplish at City, he shed light on his future with the Sky Blues by strongly suggesting that he will be preparing for next season in due course.

“I think the job is done,” Guardiola told Ole. “I don’t want to compare myself with Leo [Messi] but there is an image of him in the World Cup – “that’s it, that’s it”. No? Well, in this club I have to know that we’re there.
“This Champions League already gives meaning to the five Premier Leagues that we won. But it is also true that we need to go home, disconnect more than a little and knowing all of us, when the adrenaline starts again, we will plug in again.”

City’s win in Istanbul was extra satisfying for their fanbase after a succession of agonising Champions League defeats in recent years. Guardiola was the subject of fierce criticism back in 2021 when he named an unorthodox starting XI that was beaten by Chelsea in the final.
The Sky Blues boss admits that good fortune is required to win the competition, with Romelu Lukaku’s point-blank header saved by Ederson in the dying embers of Saturday’s showdown.
“In previous Champions Leagues, where for example we lost against Chelsea or Madrid last year in the semi-finals or even this year, you always suffer,” Guardiola added. “Look, today we are very happy but we could have tied at the end. Inter could have tied us and we could have lost. And now we would not be doing this note and everyone would not be so happy.
“In the end, sport at this high level is about details. It is true that the detail was the desire that we all had, not only the players, the entire club and all the people who have spent years with this competition where it has always been difficult for us to achieve it, because that plus is given to you by that desire and yesterday we achieved it.”
