Jermaine Pennant has been declared bankrupt after accumulating debts of over £1million, according to reports.

Birmingham County Court has reportedly issued a one-year bankruptcy order to the ex-Premier League star, who owes money to creditors including HMRC, councils, banks and utility companies.

The 39-year-old’s media company Jermaine Pennant Ltd, which was set up following his TV appearances on shows such as Celebrity Big Brother, was dissolved in 2020.

The former midfielder is now understood to have defaulted on his mortgage payments.

A source close to Pennant told The Sun: ‘He owes stacks of cash all over the place.

‘His debts are into seven-figures.

‘His debts to the taxman and banks are huge.

‘He has defaulted on mortgage payments and will likely have property repossessed.’

Sportsmail revealed in October that Pennant’s abandoned mock Tudor home in Cheshire had been converted into a cannabis farm, leading to the arrest of a 35-year-old man.

The five-bedroom mock Tudor house was bought by Pennant in 2006 and later abandoned

Pennant bought the property in 2006, but it stood empty from 2020 following his split from then-partner Alice Goodwin.

The £3million home, near Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport, was subsequently ripped apart by flames on two separate occasions between October and November, having been taken over by drug gangs.

The former Arsenal, Birmingham, Liverpool and Stoke star journeyed across many different clubs during his professional career and carved out six loan spells before his retirement from football in 2017, following a brief stint with Billericay Town.
