Paul Scholes wouldn’t want Bruno Fernandes as Man Utd captain in title race

Paul Scholes has stated Manchester United need a captain with "less emotion" than Bruno Fernandes if his former side are to end their decade-long wait for a Premier League title.

The Red Devils were demolished 7-0 by Liverpool all but ending their hopes of clinching a first top-flight crown since Sir Alex Ferguson departed at the end of the 2012/13 season. And coming up for large chunks of criticism in the Anfield massacre was Man Utd captain Fernandes.

The Portuguese midfielder continued to thrust his arms around as the Red Devils continued to ship goal after goal but was just as culpable as anyone in failing to keep tabs on Liverpool's dynamic frontline.

With regular captain Harry Maguire yet to solidify a place under Erik ten Hag, Fernandes has filled in for the bulk of the season. Though Man Utd hero Scholes believes his former side need someone cooler in order to challenge for more silverware.

"Your captain has to be an influence, leader, calm character," said Scholes on BT Sport. "I'd be concerned if United, March, April are going for the title – I don't think him as your captain would be ideal.

"He's only vice-captain at the moment as [Harry] Maguire's not playing. Going forward, bigger games, going for trophies, Champions League finals, a captain with less emotion might be better."

Stropping around against United's arch-rivals, Fernandes later complained to the bench that he should have been substituted. Ten Hag saw fit to remove star men Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro but the 28-year-old was forced to endure the final few minutes of Anfield agony.

Rounding off a miserable display, the Portugal international hit the turf clutching his face when Ibrahima Konate pushed him in the chest whilst also shoving a linesman in frustration.

"He's been asked to play in a position he's not comfortable with doing," added Scholes on Fernandes' anger. "He's sacrificed himself for that. We've seen he was frustrated with team-mates. He won't be proud of what happened on Sunday.

"Throwing his arms up in the air, pushing the official, I think he'll learn from that. He comes from Portugal where they do that all the time but in England, it's not quite as acceptable. Going forward he'll try and get rid of them little annoying things in his game."
