Paul Scholes names the midfielder he's 'surprised' nobody is trying to sign
Paul Scholes has revealed he is s a big admirer of Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey and is surprised no Premier League team is trying to sign the all-action midfielder.
The 22-year-old enhanced his burgeoning reputation last season, playing a major role in Villa’s resurgence under Unai Emery which culminated in qualification for the Europa Conference League.
Ramsey looks likely to star for England’s Under-21 side at this summer’s European Championships and scored the opening goal in last night’s opening group stage win over Czech Republic.
While Premier League clubs are scrambling to spend vast sums of money on the likes of Mason Mount, Declan Rice and Sandro Tonali, Scholes believes a player of Ramsey’s talents may offer a better solution the requirements of Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle.
Reacting to Ramsey’s performance for Lee Carsley’s team last night, he wrote on Instagram: ‘Surprised no big clubs are coming in for this lad!’.
Villa meanwhile, have confirmed that former United target, John McGinn, has signed a new long-term contract.
The midfielder’s new deal keeps him at the club until 2027.
McGinn moved to Villa Park from Hibernian in 2018 and helped them earn promotion to the Premier League in 2019 with a goal in the Championship play-off final against Derby.
The 28-year-old was named club captain last summer and was a key part of the Villa set-up last season, making 34 Premier League appearances.
He helped the club secure European football for the first time since 2010 after a stunning turnaround under manager Emery saw Villa finish seventh in the league.
McGinn also represents Scotland on the international stage, earning 56 caps for his country, and he recently featured in their Euro 2024 qualifying wins against Georgia and Norway.
