Paul Pogba may have inadvertently ended Manchester United’s pursuit of Jadon Sancho after his match-winning performance against AC Milan. Pogba made his comeback from injury for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in Thursday’s Europa League clash, scoring the winner within minutes of coming on to replace Marcus Rashford.

Pogba took up Rashford’s regular position on the left of the attack, and had an almost instant impact as he fired in from an angle three minutes after coming on as a half-time replacement at the San Siro.

The goal gave United a 2-1 aggregate lead after last week’s draw at Old Trafford, and it proved enough to secure a place in Friday’s quarter-final draw.

After the game, former Red Devils midfielder Owen Hargreaves said Solskjaer’s best option going forward might be to keep Pogba on the left and play Rashford to the right.

And it could be the answer to United’s long-standing right-wing problem which saw them embroiled in a fruitless pursuit of £100million-rated Borussia Dortmund star Sancho throughout last summer.

After Paul Scholes said the left-sided role was Pogba’s best position, his fellow BT Sport pundit Hargreaves said: “It’s a good point, because Marcus, really as good as he is off the left, he could play off the right-hand side, couldn’t he?

“Then you’ve got Cavani through the middle, Bruno’s going to play as a 10. I think that’s something Ole’s probably gone to a little bit, find a way to get your best players on the pitch and figure it out.

“Scholesy makes a good point, that was a big cameo. 45 minutes and he makes a huge impact, and I’m sure we’ll see a lot more of that.”

Asked whether Pogba would get into United’s best 11, Scholes had said: “Yes, of course he does – whether it’s in that left-side position tonight where he came in and did brilliantly well.

“I think that position takes a little bit of defensive responsibility off him.

“It depends who is fit – I do like Rashford or Martial on that left hand side I must admit.

“But he’s got every bit as much quality as them, probably more quality than them.

“He obviously hasn’t got as much pace. I think with those two holding midfielder players, it gives them that license just to be a bit freer as well from that position.

“There’s no doubting the quality he has. As long as he doesn’t have to think about having to defend, which he does get caught a little bit in that position, I think it could be a good position for him.

“When he played for Juventus, that was his best position, either out on the left-hand side or on the right-hand side and we all know the football he produced in that team.”
