Paul Pogba has called upon his Manchester United team-mates to turn paltry points into wins after slipping up in a 1-1 draw on Sunday at a lacklustre Southampton side on the south coast.

Pogba, who registered his fifth assist in just two Premier League games yesterday, was left frustrated by his team-mates who he felt could have offered a lot more grit and grunt at St Mary’s Stadium.

United went 1-0 down in the first half courtesy of a fortuitous Fred own goal – but, after they came from behind to win often last season, there was little reason to worry in the United camp.

The struggle for United, however, came after Mason Greenwood nabbed the equaliser as they failed to assert their dominance and Southampton stood strong to earn a well-earned point for themselves.

But Pogba was less than happy with the outcome – claiming that they are the sort of situations you must come out on top of if you are to win the league, something United haven’t done for eight years.

“I think we deserved more, but you have to show more also on the pitch,” Pogba said post-match.

“After the goal we scored, we dropped a little bit, we lose control of the game a bit and that’s why I think we didn’t get the second goal.

“I think we dropped a few points today. We get one point, we stay focused. Obviously we’re happy we didn’t lose today and we take this point with positivity.

“But we know those game. I think at the end of the season, those games, those three points, will be very important.

“When they got their goal we didn’t stand off them and we kept the pressure on high.

“We had a couple of chances towards the end where we could’ve gone and won it but as I said it’s another positive and another point against a big team.

United’s downfall throughout the years has been slipping up in the games against less talented opposition.

Having done the league double over rivals Manchester City in 2019/20, and remained unbeaten against Chelsea since November 2017 in the league, there is no question over United’s mentality when playing the elite teams in the league.

Draws were their downfall last season – and having fallen victim to stalemates with Fulham, West Brom, Everton and Crystal Palace (twice) last season, Pogba is right in saying their mentality must change.

But with draws against teams such as Southampton – who have lost their key threat in Danny Ings, and are one of the bookies’ favourites to go down – it should be more than just Pogba who recognises United should be doing better.

The Red Devils have the chance to redeem themselves with a win away at Wolves on Sunday.

And with Bruno Lage’s side having lost their opening two games, Pogba will be hoping that United can pile on the pressure and get back to winning ways.
