Paul Pogba issues reminder to Man Utd squad as Red Devils go top before Liverpool showdown
Burnley v Man Utd: Match in pictures
Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba insisted that there is still a ‘long way’ to go in the Premier League title race after his goal helped the Red Devils to a narrow victory over Burnley at Turf Moor on Tuesday evening. The Frenchman’s volley in the second half sealed all three points for the visitors, sending United top of the Premier League table ahead of Sunday’s opponents Liverpool.
The 20-time champions have established themselves as title contenders once again this season after a slow start to the campaign.
United hit their stride in December after the disappointment of their early Champions League group stage exit, and have continued their strong form into the new year, registering seven wins from their last seven Premier League outings with the victory over Burnley.
Pogba revealed after the final whistle that although he was pleased with the result, the Red Devils will need to keep their form up for the entire second half of the season if they are to challenge for their first domestic crown since 2013.
“We know that the game today was very hard, very difficult and obviously we wanted to win,” Pogba told Sky Sports.
“We know it’s not easy to play here. We got the three points and we’re happy for that but there’s still a long way and now we focus again until the end of the season.”

The match at Turf Moor was, like many top flight games this season, shrouded in VAR controversy with a number of first-half incidents taking centre stage.
United skipper Harry Maguire controversially saw a first-half goal ruled out for an apparent foul on Erik Pieters despite protests from the visitors.
“It was a goal for sure – I don’t know what happened,” Pogba said of the incident. “It was a beautiful goal and the referee decided that it was not. It was a strange decision but we got the result we wanted so we’re happy.”
It appeared at times as if United were not getting the rub of the green, but regardless they managed to claim three points and send a huge warning to their Merseyside rivals ahead of their upcoming title showdown.
Pogba revealed that United’s game plan was to simply remain patient in their play with the hope of eventually seeing a reward for their efforts.
“You can see that the game was going both ways, it’s very hard to play here,” he added.
“They have a style of play, very strong and we knew it would be difficult. We had to keep our heads calm and just focus on ourselves and hope the goal would come and it did come. It was a great performance from everyone, good focus.
“[I’m] always happy when I win – today we won and I’m happy we played well. Still a long way to go and we have big games to go so we have to focus on that.”
