Paul Merson has fired back at ‘clueless’ fans who mocked him on social media after he correctly predicted that Tottenham would fail to beat Chelsea on Monday.
Tottenham, who faced an uphill battle after Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were sent off for reckless challenges, slumped to a 4-1 defeat against the Blues despite a spirited performance from Ange Postecoglou’s remaining nine men.
Cole Palmer’s penalty cancelled out Dejan Kulusevski’s early opener for the hosts just before the break, before Nicolas Jackson netted a second-half hat-trick to end Tottenham’s unbeaten start to the season.
Despite Spurs’ superb form heading into the clash in north London, Merson — a former Arsenal player and Chelsea fan — admitted a Tottenham victory would ‘shock’ him.
‘I’m very confident for Chelsea on Monday night,’ Merson said on Sky Sports. ‘I’ll be shocked if they lose.’

Several fans swiftly mocked the former England star on social media, with one Tottenham supporter writing on X, formerly known as Twitter: ‘When we beat Chelsea, Paul Merson needs to retire as a pundit.’
Biting back with an amusing response after Chelsea’s win, Merson replied: ‘You will have to put up with me 4-1 more year at least. COYB.’
He also said in a separate post: ‘All them people that called me clueless, hope your off to bed. COYB.’

Chelsea climbed to 10th in the Premier League table after the enthralling victory, while Tottenham missed out on the opportunity to reclaim top spot from reigning champions Manchester City.
Merson’s jibes will be the least of Spurs fans’ worries after the defeat, with both Udogie and Romero now suspended and influential summer signings James Maddison and Micky van de Ven injured.
The victory will give Mauricio Pochettino’s side an added boost of confidence ahead of hosting City in the Premier League next weekend.
Meanwhile, Tottenham must now navigate a tricky run of fixtures against Wolves and Aston Villa before facing the champions in early December with a depleted squad.
