Path to World Cup glory opens up for England as Morocco through to semi-finals

England's path to World Cup glory has revealed itself as the tournament whittled down to five teams left ahead of the last quarter-final.

Morocco have claimed yet another giant scalp after defeating Portugal against all odds on Saturday afternoon. Having already beaten Spain in the previous round, it is the stuff of dreams for the Atlas Lions.

Youssef En-Nesyri's first-half header was enough to down the Portuguese, who did not start Cristiano Ronaldo for the second game in a row. And it means that Morocco are the first African team to ever reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.

They will meet whoever prevails when England and France face each other on Saturday evening, with both sides licking their lips at the potential World Cup trophy that is edging nearer and nearer.

However, picking a winner between the two European foes has proved difficult – though danger man Kylian Mbappe might have something to say about that, having scored five times already this competition.

Whoever wins, Morocco will have no fear having already defeated two juggernauts in Portugal and Spain while a potential final will have every player dreaming. Who they face in the final remains to be seen – with Argentina and Croatia set to do battle.

Lionel Messi's side are the favourites to go on and claim victory but Croatia have proved tricky customers after reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup for the second time in a row. They have already defeated Brazil and Japan, as well as edging Belgium out in their group.

Having won the World Cup in 2018, France will fancy their chances this year round and have one of the most exciting attacks in international football. Mbappe might grab the headlines but Olivier Giroud, Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann are some supporting cast.

But England will have reason to feel confident having looked solid at the back while the likes of Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford and Jude Bellingham have looked in fine fettle. Whoever emerges victorious at the Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday evening will have one eye on the trophy.
