Party boy Jack Grealish defends boozy three-day long celebrations

Jack Grealish revels as Manchester City parade treble

Jack Grealish has opened up on the ‘best weekend of my life’ after indulging in a three-day long binge session during Manchester City’s celebrations marking their historic treble. The winger played a key role for Pep Guardiola’s side last season as they won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League all in one campaign for the first time in their history, and Grealish was keen to ensure he made memories that would last a lifetime.

The 27-year-old made no attempt to hide away during the team’s trophy parade through the city of Manchester and was spotted glugging down alcohol poured into his mouth by his team-mates during the event.

Grealish celebrated with fans on the streets of Istanbul and partied into the early hours of Sunday morning after their Champions League triumph over Inter Milan, and he was joined by City team-mates in enjoying their status as the first English side in 24 years to complete a magnificent treble.

And the England international, who revealed he didn’t sleep for 72 hours in a wild drinking session with his City colleagues, beamed at the best week of his life before reporting for international duty with the Three Lions last week.

When asked if he had recovered from the celebrations, Grealish told talkSPORT: “Yeah, of course! I probably had one of the most enjoyable seasons of my life. The second half of the season, I played a big part in something that will go down in Man City history.

“Last weekend was the best weekend I’ve ever had. I’m still trying to come to terms with it. I’ve been on such a high the last week. I feel good.

“I trained on Wednesday and Thursday, and felt alright. Obviously, Saturday and Sunday, I felt good.”

The 27-year-old was an unused substitute for Friday night’s 4-0 win over Malta and was left on the bench by Gareth Southgate from the start for their 7-0 demoliton of North Macedonia on Monday, although the midfielder was brought midway through the second half.

Grealish had been subjected to some criticism in the media for his manner of celebrating City’s success after he was pictured topless amongst the fans and spotted drinking straight from a bottle.

But the winger said he was nonplussed by those criticising him and questioned why he shouldn’t be allowed to let his hair down when the season is over.

“Not really,” he said when asked if the criticism bothered him. “I’d done something that comes around once in a lifetime. The last time it was done… I don’t know when Man United did it, but it hasn’t been done for ages.

“So why not celebrate like that? Everyone was with me. I wasn’t on my own, going out with my friends. I was with the whole team. We enjoyed ourselves on the Saturday, Sunday, Monday. I had the best weekend of my life. I’d just won the Champions League and I was so emotional after it.

“I was probably on the biggest emotional high I’ve ever been on. The manager [Southgate] didn’t tell me, but I knew I wouldn’t play on the Friday.”
