Paddy Kenny got "heartburn" from scoffing away fans pork pies in derby match

A former Sheffield United goalkeeper has revealed scoffing pork pies on the pitch led to him suffering from heartburn.

Paddy Kenny made over 250 appearances for the Blades, becoming a cult icon in goal under then-manager Neil Warnock.

The keeper – who represented the Republic of Ireland on the international stage – was also renowned for his antics, and has admitted to scrapping with Warnock in the past.

Now, speaking to Soccer AM producer Tubes on his Golf Life series, Paddy has opened up about how he enjoyed bantering with away fans while on the pitch.

Paddy remembered that he was playing for Sheffield United in a local derby away against Rotherham United when he had a hilarious interaction with the opposing fans.

“I’ve come up to their fans behind the goal in the second half, and as I run towards them I’ve got my towel and my drink and they were singing, ‘you fat b*****d’," he began.

“And I heard someone shout, ‘Kenny, you fat c***, do you want a pork pie?’ So I looked, and you know the pack of six pork pies? He’s stood there with six pork pies, so I thought, ‘f***ing brilliant’.

“So I went over, took one, they were buzzing their t**s off. So I’m eating this pork pie, before the start of the second half, and then the referees about to start the second half, and I’ve gone to the bloke, ‘do you mind if I have another?’”

And, with the game restarting, Paddy explained that he was left to speedily scoff down his second pie.

“Pastry gives me heartburn. Ten minutes later, I’m like ‘f***, middle of the second half of a championship match on a Friday night at Rotherham in a derby,” he continued.

“So next thing I’m shouting on the physio.”

Earlier, in part one of the video, Paddy had also delved into his relationship with iconic manager Warnock.

The former keeper shared a number of stories, including one incident when the players had no idea where to look during one of the manager’s naked dressing-room rants.
