Ozil’s ‘irritating’ trait in training sums up how he split opinion at Arsenal
A Mesut Ozil trait from Arsenal training sessions neatly sums up how the German midfielder always divided opinion during his time at the club.
Ozil looks set to finalise his long-awaited move to Turkish side Fenerbahce imminently, bringing to an end seven-and-a-half years in North London.
While he contributed with a number of magical moments at the Emirates – particularly early on – Ozil's hot-and-cold form often drew criticism from supporters.
He was deemed by some to be a luxury player, and in the end he was frozen out by manager Mikel Arteta amid off-the-field issues.
One thing that cannot be denied is Ozil's obvious talent, and at his best he was one of the most technically gifted players in the Premier League.
And according to a report by The Independent, the 31-year-old never missed the opportunity to demonstrate his ability in training.
They claim that during the sessions Ozil would constantly put spin on the ball when passing, no matter how simple the pass was.
This left some of his younger teammates in awe at his skill, but irritated a number of the more senior ones, who saw it as unnecessary showboating.
The report also states that it is completely Arteta's decision to get rid of Ozil, and that the Spaniard has come under no pressure from the club to sell the player.
It is believed Arteta simply does not feel that Ozil is 100% committed to the club, and only wants players in his team who are all singing off the same hymn sheet.
Fenerbahce are likely to officially confirm the signing of Ozil within the next few days, and it will be intriguing to see how he fares in the Turkish Super Lig.
Gunners supporters, meanwhile, will no doubt debate for many years exactly in what esteem Ozil should be held after his truly eventful – and rarely dull – time at Arsenal.
