Ozil’s Arsenal getaway plan from £7m deal terminated to private jet on runway

Mesut Ozil is edging closer to the Arsenal exit door after more than seven years in north London.

The German's signing was a major coup for the Gunners back in 2013 and he was initially a star at the Emirates.

His ability to create for his team-mates made him a vital asset and Arsenal managed to end their trophy drought the year he arrived.

The Gunners challenged Leicester for the title in 2015/16 with Ozil playing a crucial role and he became the fastest player in Premier League history to record 50 assists.

Since Arsene Wenger's departure though things have quickly unravalled.

Ozil was a favourite under the Frenchman and the Gunners hierarchy tied him down to a lucrative contract worth £350,000-a-week in Wenger's final year.

But his successor Unai Emery struggled to accommodate the German and it has been the same story with Mikel Arteta.

Ozil's creative flair has never been in question, but for years his willingness to do a job off the ball has been criticised.

As the game moves towards a high pressing style the 32-year-old has found it increasingly hard to establish himself as a regular.

Arteta opted to leave the former Real Madrid man out of his domestic and European squads this season.

It means Ozil has not played since before the first lockdown in March.

He has previously stated his desire to see out his contract but the German and the Gunners look to have reached an agreement that will see his deal terminated which will free him up to sign for Fenerbahce.

It means the player giving up £7m of earnings with his Arsenal contract still having six months to run.

MLS side DC United expressed an interest in the player and offered to further his profile off the pitch in an effort to tempt him across the Atlantic.

But in now looks like a three-and-a-half year deal with the Tukish side is almost finalised which will end Ozil's recent Emirates nightmare.

A big signing ceremony is in the pipeline for the World Cup winner who will be flown to Turkey by Fenerbahce president Ali Koç’s private plane reports DHA.

The Super Lig outfit have long been linked with Ozil whose Turkish wife and heritage has always made a move likely.

Details of the flight are expected to be completed today with Ozil already sorting out living arrangements.

He is set to settle in temporary accommodation while a villa that he bought in Çamlıca is renovated.

Fenerbahce currently sit second in the table, one point behind leaders Besiktas after 17 games.

They are without a league title since 2014.
