Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed he is ‘kicking himself’ after falling down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp – but vowed to keep pushing for a starting spot.

The midfielder has made just two starts all season long in a campaign that was blighted by a niggling knee injury at the end of last summer – ruling him out until December.

The 27-year-old has been desperate to prove his fitness to Klopp and believes he is now in a good condition, but will continue to ‘ask questions’ of the German and work hard for his place.

He climbed back into Klopp’s thinking by coming on as a substitute against Burnley at Turf Moor and scoring their third goal to wrap up a crucial 3-0 win in the battle to clinch a top four place.

‘I’ve felt pretty good for a while now, but for whatever reason it’s not been so easy with opportunities,’ he told LFTV.

‘Sometimes that’s part of football, it’s not what you like. I’ve been kicking myself, trying to push and ask questions, but sometimes it doesn’t always go your way.

‘The main thing is I stay focused. I’m absolutely delighted to be a part of this team and play for this football club, and that’s what I want to do.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been ‘kicking himself’ but will continue to work hard in training

‘That’s all I’ve been focusing on really, trying to make sure that I work as hard as I can for the boys. Keep training well, keep giving the manager decisions to make, as the other lads have in a similar position to me at the minute.’

Oxlade-Chamberlain has played a total of 16 games since recovering from his injury lay-off – but has only managed two starts in that time. In those games against Southampton and Burnley, which were both 1-0 defeats, he was hooked with more than half an hour to play.

He has been forced to make do with late cameo appearances – in his last six outings, the England international has managed a total of just 37 minutes.

The former Arsenal star still has two years remaining on his deal, and while he admits he is going through a ‘difficult moment’ in his career, he wants to ‘keep his head down’ and take his opportunities when they are offered to him.

‘That’s all we can do, keep our heads down and whenever we get the opportunity, like tonight, I went on there and did something positive,’ he added.

‘I’d have liked to have done that a few more times coming on this season, but you have these spells in football sometimes and the main thing is I’ve been through difficult moments in my career.

He said he could only focus on keeping his head down and taking any opportunity given to him

‘Just being fit and healthy for a start, that’s always a good thing and gives you a base to work off.

‘I’ve tried to work as hard as I can, keep my head down and keep believing in what we’re all trying to do here which is qualify for that top four. Any time I get the opportunity to help, I’ve got to make sure I’m ready to do that.’

Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Liverpool from the Gunners in 2017, and has gone on to make 103 appearances for the Reds. It’s proved to be a hugely successful move for him too – adding a Premier League title and the Champions League to his CV.
