Oliver Skipp plays a pass to Richarlison – who isn’t even on the pitch

Tottenham midfielder Oliver Skipp was left scratching his head after Richarlison failed to collect his pass against AC Milan – not knowing that he hadn't yet come off the bench.

Skipp was named in the starting XI for Spurs' trip to Italy, but they were chasing the game from the seventh minute following an opening goal from Brahim Diaz.

Having received the ball from Fraser Forster in the 68th minute, Skipp beat his man and burst into the midfield as the visitors looked for an equalising goal at the San Siro.

Having got his head up to scan for team-mates, the 22-year-old saw Richarlison out the corner of his eye, not realising that he was in fact off the pitch and not yet on as a sub.

With Skipp playing what turned out to be the loosest of passes, Jermaine Jenas fell silent on commentary duty with Twitter users left rather amused with Spurs going on to lose.

One reply said: "Why would he pass Richarlison the ball anyway he’s never scored for spurs in 30 games."

A second simply called the pass a Spursy one, with Antonio Conte's side needing to win their second leg to face elimination at the round of 16 stage.

The pass was somewhat reminiscent of a Renato Sanches pass during his time at Swansea, in which he sent the ball into the Carabao Cup logo on the advertising board.

Another incident saw Aaron Ramsey play a perfect pass into the path of the Vitality dachshund, who happened to be trotting past on moving advert.

Despite Spurs slipping to defeat, the removal of the away goals rule means a victory by a one-goal margin at home will lead to extra-time and potentially penalties.

Conte has said of the tie: "We played this game away and I have to tell you the atmosphere was incredible; the Milan supporters pushed their team a lot from the start until the end. I know for the second leg, in our stadium, my expectation is to see our fans us push us to try to overcome Milan.

"As I said before, it wasn’t easy, the atmosphere… to play against 80,000 people, not easy. I know our fans in our stadium will create the right atmosphere to have a fantastic game to try to go to the next round."
