Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he does not know when David de Gea will be available for Manchester United again. United’s No 1 returned to Spain to be present for the birth of his first child, a daugher delivered safely on Thursday.
But having been granted permission to stay “as long as he needs” and with quarantine impacting further it looks likely to be April before he is available.
After extending his congratulations, Solskjaer conceded De Gea’s immediate future was up in the air.
“I will give him the time he needs before he comes back,” said the United manager. “He has to go home and in the old world that’s a day – you go and come back in a day.
“But with the pandemic and with the quarantines it’s a different world, so when David wanted to go and be there to support his girlfriend, there’s not even a decision to make.”

Quarantine rules says that De Gea could have to wait at least six days on his arrival back in England before playing.
And if he was to stay with his new family for a week that could mean he is ruled out until after the international break at the end of March.
“I don’t know when he will be back. As soon as David travels back, we have to follow the government rules, I expect him to be available very soon.
De Gea’s absence presents a massive opportunity for Dean Henderson to stake a claim starting with the trip to Manchester City tomorrow.
And Solskjaer has no doubts De Gea’s understudy is ready.
“Dean did well against Palace and I’m sure he is looking forward to this City game as well,” he said.
“He had that experience this season in Carabao Cup so that will stand him in good stead. Dean has come in and played well and he’s ready.”
