Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sends emotional message to Man Utd players after sacking
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told the Manchester United squad, ‘you know we’re better than this’ as he was dismissed as manager on Sunday, urging them all to ‘enjoy being a Man United player.’
The Norwegian was dismissed on Sunday after the 4-1 defeat at Watford in the Premier League the previous day, but he has taken time to be interviewed by the club after his sacking.
A legend as a player with the Red Devils, things may not have ended well for Solskjaer as manager, but he is determined to leave his post on good terms.
The 48-year-old revealed he tried to inspire the players one more time before he left on Sunday, and sent an emotional message to Michael Carrick, who steps up from his role as assistant to caretaker manager as United go to Villarreal on Tuesday.
‘As I’ve said to them this morning as well, trust yourselves, you know we’re better than this,’ Solskjaer told Manchester United club media.
‘We’ve not been able to show it but go out, chest out, enjoy being a Man United player, Champions League, the biggest stage. If and when you win the game, you’re through to the next round. Michael [Carrick] is going to be in charge. Michael, I have the utmost respect [for].
‘I love Michael to bits. I’m becoming emotional now because he’s top, they’ll be fine. I’ll watch them and support them.’
Solskjaer says he will be watching on as a supporter from now on, wishing his successor luck, whoever that may be.
‘I am a fan and I wish the players all the best,’ he said. ‘There are some very, very good players there, some good people. I’m sure we’ll see them puff their chest out and they’ll go on a run.
‘I’ll watch the team of course and hopefully, the next manager comes in and I want to support him. I want him to be successful, hopefully I’ve laid the foundations for that to happen because I know I’m good at what I’m doing.’
