Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has returned to the dugout for the first time since leaving Manchester United by taking charge of his son’s under-14 side in Norway, according to reports. Solskjaer spent almost three years at the helm at Old Trafford before he was unceremoniously dismissed prior to the halfway point of last season, with Ralf Rangnick replacing him on an interim basis before Erik ten Hag was appointed permanently at the end of the campaign.
Solskjaer has stayed out of the limelight since leaving United and is yet to return to club management despite having been out of work for almost an entire year. He is back at the wheel at junior level, though, after overseeing his youngest son Elijah’s victory with Kristiansund over Blindheim in his native Norway, according to VG.
It is said that Solskjaer was in the dugout for the match and has been training the under-14s on a weekly basis after returning to his hometown. He revealed after he was sacked by United that he was intending to go back to familiar surroundings in order to be closer to his family, who had lived separately from him while he was in charge of the Red Devils.
“I’ll spend some time with my family,” said Solskjaer at the time. “It’s been probably the most difficult part during the pandemic, with Norway being open and here being closed, my family moved back to Norway and the young one, he loves it back there. We’ve lived apart.”

Solskjaer has since explained that he is helping to train his son’s youth team and putting an emphasis on getting the players to enjoy their football when quizzed on what he has been doing by Norwegian newspaper Tidens Krav. He also revealed that he has turned down several approaches to return to professional management but refused to go into detail about which clubs have been in contact with him.
It remains to be seen when Solskjaer will be ready to go back into senior football after his exit from United, who continued to struggle under the guidance of Rangnick before limping to a sixth-placed finish at the end of last season. The Red Devils have enjoyed a change in fortunes since the arrival of Ten Hag, though, and will undoubtedly be aiming to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League over the course of the campaign ahead.
Solskjaer remains popular among United fans in spite of his sacking last year, though, with his name often heard ringing around Old Trafford on match days. He is yet to attend a Red Devils game since his departure from the club but has previously been spotted in the stands to watch his daughter Karna turn out for the women’s side.
It is believed that Solskjaer could decide to work with Michael Carrick, his assistant at United, when he eventually decides to return to senior management in future. The former England midfielder was named as United’s caretaker boss in the immediate aftermath of Solskjaer’s exit but left as soon as Rangnick’s temporary appointment was confirmed.
