Ole Gunnar Solskjaer quizzed Man Utd officials over David Luiz red card

Man Utd: Solskjaer happy with ‘hunger’ in record win

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told match officials before their match against Southampton that he does not believe David Luiz should have been sent off against Wolves just hours earlier before Jan Bednarek was also given his marching orders. It came on a whirlwind night for the Premier League that saw four red cards in two matches.

United boss Solskjaer quizzed match officials over the red card Arsenal defender Luiz saw in the previous match on Tuesday night – right before Southampton ace Bednarek was also sent off.

Only once in a blue moon might you see a team reduced to nine men but for it to happen twice on the same night is almost unimaginable.

But that is exactly what happened to Arsenal first and then Southampton – with both teams losing.

The Gunners saw Luiz sent off and then Bernd Leno whereas the Saints had Alex Jankewitz and Bednarek shown red cards.

Mikel Arteta watched on as his side lost 2-1 to Wolves whereas Ralph Hassenhuttl faced another 9-0 defeat – the second in two seasons his team has had.

However, Luiz was given his marching orders in controversial fashion with his challenge on Willian Jose seemingly unintentional.

A similar situation went ahead at Old Trafford later on when Bednarek tripped Anthony Martial in the box, though the contact looked minimal – if at all.

And Solskjaer had his say on the Luiz incident – with the match officials before United even kicked a ball that night.

“Funnily enough, I had a discussion with the referees before the game,” the Red Devils coach said.

“I asked them what they thought about the David Luiz sending off because I don’t think he should’ve been sent off either, and Bednarek definitely shouldn’t have been sent off.

“The law needs to be looked at. But the letter of the law is if you foul someone, deny a goalscoring opportunity and you don’t attempt the ball, you’re going to be shown a red card.

“There was contact there but it shouldn’t have been a sending off. I think everyone in football agrees on this.”

The result keeps United second, though they are now joint-top with Manchester City – who have two games in hand.

Arsenal, on the other hand, stay 10th, but Everton and Aston Villa – who are the two sides directly above them – have three games in hand over the Gunners.
