Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised Scott McTominay for his ‘authoritative’ finishing after he scored an extra-time winner against West Ham in the FA Cup.

McTominay broke the deadlock seven minutes into extra time – earning United a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals – and bringing his goal tally for the season up to seven.

McTominay – who used to play as a forward – has now scored more goals than Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek, Fred and Nemanja Matic combined this season.

Solskjaer claims McTominay enjoys occupying dangerous areas, saying: ‘Scott has really, really developed that part of his game this season.

‘Of course we let him go into the box more often, unleash him. You see that he doesn’t mind being in those positions. He’s a very good striker of the ball and a very clinical finisher.

‘As he was a forward or a striker in his younger days, you can see his authority when he gets a chance to finish.’

Solskjaer felt his players provided the perfect response to their disappointing 3-3 draw with Everton on Saturday.

Speaking of their 1-0 win over West Ham, he said: ‘I felt we dominated. I thought we were in complete control of the first half.

‘In the second half it became more of a game. When it’s only 1-0 and we are wasteful, anything can happen to us – we knew that from the last game [Everton].

‘It’s just about finishing the game off but we’re through. We’re in the hat and that’s what we wanted.

‘I think we got about 15 to 17 shots in the end but we need to be more clinical. We should’ve finished the game off earlier and finished in 90 minutes but sometimes it doesn’t happen.

‘We needed to have a good result and a good feeling today because we were low after the Everton game. It’s hard to take but they were really focused and did the job.

‘Of course you want to win every game. We want to challenge and we want to go to the final. That’s what we’re here at Manchester United for.

‘Sometimes you’re lucky with draws in the cup – we haven’t been that lucky – but obviously we move another step closer to the final.’

The result sees United reach the last eight for a seventh consecutive year. However, Solskjaer will be eager to see the club lift the trophy for the first time since 2016.

United will be back in action at West Brom in the Premier League this Sunday.
