Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has stoked the rivalry ahead of Saturday’s Old Trafford derby by claiming: ‘We’re the No 1 club in Manchester — and probably the world.’

Manchester United have fallen behind over the last decade, winning one Premier League title to Manchester City’s five. But when asked if he could ever see City eclipsing United, Solskjaer replied: ‘No, I can’t. The thing is, you have to have respect for what they’ve done in the last 10 years — even more so in the last four or five, with how dominant they’ve been in England and Europe. But we are Manchester United, we are always going to come back. I think we are the No 1 club in Manchester and that also probably means in the world.’

Solskjaer insisted his team have put their 5-0 humiliation by Liverpool a fortnight ago behind them, adding: ‘We’ve taken the flak and we deserved it because it was nowhere near good enough on many levels, and now we have to play another very good team. It will show if we have learned enough.

Meanwhile, Bernardo Silva has claimed City will go for the jugular on Saturday and backed them to outscore their hosts.

The midfielder believes City can inflict as much damage as Liverpool did at Old Trafford — although Guardiola had earlier refuted that idea in a terse press conference.

‘We have scored so many goals this season,’ Silva said. ‘We know when we are focused and do well that we are a team that has the capacity to score four or five goals per game. We are going to try to score as many goals as we can in Old Trafford.’

Guardiola had shied away from making proclamations ahead of the derby, but Silva was adamant City must leave with victory given the state of the title race.

‘Both teams need to win — nobody wants to drop points,’ he added. ‘I always have the feeling that we play better away than at home against them. I don’t know if it’s just in my head but I always think that most of the games we’ve won were at Old Trafford.’

Manchester City boss Guardiola, however, told his players to remain wary of ‘Fergie Time’ after a collection of late rallies by Solskjaer’s team so far this term

Guardiola, however, told his players to remain wary of ‘Fergie Time’ after a collection of late rallies by Solskjaer’s team so far this term.

‘I’m pretty sure they are going to press man-to-man up front and after defend deeper,’ he said. ‘They’ll attack the channels and use Bruno Fernandes to ignite something.

‘Be ready the last minutes of the first half and the second half. I’m pretty sure they will call Sir Alex Ferguson to install the Fergie Time!’
