Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted he will name a full-strength team against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon that could include Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes after their Europa League heroics.

The duo scored braces as United came from 2-1 down at half-time to beat Roma 6-2 in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie on Thursday night.

That gives United a massive advantage heading to Rome for next week’s return fixture, knowing the Italians must either win 4-0 or score five goals without reply if United net once at the Stadio Olimpico.

Such a strong first-leg result gives Solskjaer extra freedom to name a strong team against bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

United welcome their rivals looking to move that bit closer to securing a second-placed finish and know in turn that they can severely damage the Reds’ top-four prospects.

And Solskjaer, discussing his potential team selection, has hinted that he plans to play the likes of Cavani and Fernandes from the off against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The United boss declared that the home team need “experience” in the side against their rivals, whom they have not lost on home soil to in any competition since 2014.

Solskjaer said: “I think the whole team took responsibility, of course, Bruno [Fernandes] was part of that as well.

“We picked an experienced team to handle setbacks, to be able to handle setbacks.

“It was a big plus for me the way Bruno, Paul [Pogba], Edinson [Cavani], Marcus [Rashford], even at his young age, the runs he made in the second half he might not get the credit for it, but his movement was excellent.

“Against Liverpool we need experience, we need quality, we need to defend well, we need every aspect of the game.

“Because we know the quality they have got and they can hit that quality against us easily.”

Quizzed about team news, the Red Devils boss continued: “I think everyone should be available. No fresh injury reports from the semi.”

That could mean Solskjaer makes very few changes at all from the win over Roma on Thursday night, with the back-line poised to stay the same.

Dean Henderson is expected to replace David de Gea in goal but Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw should start in either full-back position, Victor Lindelof likely partnering Harry Maguire in central defence though Eric Bailly is an option to come in.

Scott McTominay and Fred could continue their central midfield partnership with Fernandes in the No 10 role ahead of them.

Pogba could remain out on the right flank with Solskjaer having to decide whether to select Mason Greenwood or Rashford down the right.

Cavani, 34, is expected to lead the line after the Uruguayan veteran took his total for the season to 12 goals with his Roma brace.

Victory for United could be the death knell for Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

And Solskjaer added of Sunday’s game: “We don’t go out there thinking about that. We’re just thinking about winning ourselves.

“Whatever that does to Liverpool cannot be of our concern. Throughout the season you have games you look forward to.

“This Liverpool game at home is one of the biggest games of the season, it doesn’t matter if we’re first or second or third or fourth. No matter what, this is a massive, massive game.”
