Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains decision to start Harry Maguire against Leicester
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that it was difficult decision to start the returning Harry Maguire in Manchester United’s clash against Leicester.
Maguire has missed United’s last two games against Villarreal and Everton after suffering a calf injury during the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in September.
The United captain was also a doubt for the game against the Foxes after Solskjaer confirmed in his pre-match press conference that he had only returned first-team training for the first time on Friday.
However, Maguire has been named in a strong United side alongside Victor Lindelof in the Red Devils’ defence.
Speaking before the match, The Norwegian boss explained his thinking behind the selection.
‘It was a difficult decision because he has not trained a lot. He did not feel any reaction so we decided to go with him,’ He said.
Speaking earlier this week, Maguire gave a positive update on his injury that also ruled him out of England’s recent World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary.
‘I am getting better, I am progressing as I should be. It is obviously a frustrating injury for me to get, but I am progressing and I will be back on the pitch soon,’ he said.
Maguire is one of five changes to the United team from the 1-1 draw with Everton, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba also returning the starting XI.
However, there was no place in the squad for Anthony Martial with Solskjaer confirming that the France attacker arrived back from international duty unfit.
‘He’s not trained all week. Hopefully we can have him back soon,’ he added.
