Ole Gunnar Solskjaer categorically rules OUT a move for Sergio Aguero
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer categorically rules OUT a move for free agent Sergio Aguero this summer… with the Manchester United boss fiercely opposed to anyone transferring across the city
- Solskjaer said he would question a player’s loyalty if they moved between rivals
- His comments come as a thinly veiled dig at Carlos Tevez, who moved in 2009
- Solskjaer also stated he ‘didn’t really agree’ with the Argentine’s transfer to City
- Norwegian could call Marcus Rashford back from injury to play his 300th game
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has ruled out any prospect of Sergio Aguero being at Old Trafford next season because of his long association with Manchester City.
Aguero is poised to be the hottest free transfer of the summer following confirmation he is leaving City, where he is the club’s record goal scorer.
Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona have already been linked with Argentine striker but Manchester United won’t be joining the chase with Solskjaer opposed to anyone moving across the city – and sure Aguero would be reluctant as well.
Manchester United’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has ruled out a move for Sergio Aguero this summer
‘I wouldn’t expect any player who has played for a club for 10 years to want to go to their local rivals,’ insists the United boss.
‘It’s not for me. I know we’re professionals, but when you play for Man United you don’t go to Man City. We’ve had examples of that and I didn’t really agree with it. I won’t name names but you all know who I mean. Enough said.
‘When I played for Man United, if a rival club tried to sign me, and I had gone – well, where’s the loyalty? Loyalty is one of the values I really, really put highly.’
Despite Aguero being the hottest free transfer, Solskjaer will forgo him due to his City links
The last high-profile player to move between the two Manchester clubs was Carlos Tevez in 2009, causing friction as City ran a poster campaign with the tagline ‘Welcome to Manchester’; Owen Hargreaves also joined City from United in 2011.
Ahead of a big week in the Europa League, Manchester United will try to cement their position in the Premier League’s top four at home to Brighton.
Marcus Rashford is hoping to return for his 300th career game having missed out for England in the international break with a foot injury.

The forward has also suffered with shoulder problems this season but Solskjaer has no long-term fears about the 23-year-old’s welfare despite a heavy workload for club and country.
‘I don’t have any concerns about Marcus’s general fitness at all,’ he said. ‘I have been impressed by his resilience and robustness. He’s got a character where even if he feels something he doesn’t want to miss games.
‘Every footballer carries a bit here, a bit there. Very seldom do you say that you’re 100 per cent fit. You might be 95 per cent fit to 99 per cent.
‘It is just the way when you’re a professional footballer, especially now with a game every three or four days. There has never been a risk we felt will damage him.’
United are in the hunt for three signings, including a winger and centre-forward in the next transfer window, but Solskjaer is prepared to wait until the last day to land his top targets, as they did at the start of last year with Bruno Fernandes.
‘Every manager in the world would like to have the players available as soon as possible and put their coaching and plans together but that’s not how the world works all the time,’ said the United manager.
Solskjaer also provided an update on the fitness of Red Devils forward Marcus Rashford (left)
‘If you have a target, it could mean you have to wait until the last day – like Bruno for example. We knew he was the one and that worked out well. Players can adapt quickly if they’re the right fit.
‘I’m not the one in the trenches with the negotiations so I will leave that to the club and so far I think we’ve done a really good job. We have got the targets we really wanted and been building.
‘There is always an opportunity even though this window will be different to any other because of the pandemic and the money teams have lost.’
