'Oh my!' – Solskjaer & Roy Keane react to Paul Pogba's huge miss in Man Utd draw
Both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Roy Keane feel Paul Pogba should have secured all three points for Manchester United against Liverpool on Sunday after the Frenchman missed a gilt-edged chance late in the game.
The two title rivals played out a goalless draw at Anfield which sees United retain their place at the top of the table, though they had chances to end Liverpool’s long unbeaten run at home and move six points clear of the champions.
Pogba had the best chance, rifling a shot straight at Alisson from six yards out, and United legend Keane felt it was a decisive moment to prove he was the ‘main man’ for the Red Devils.
‘When you get these opportunities like Pogba did there… I’m so disappointed,’ said Keane on Sky Sports after the game.
‘Because we’ve been giving Pogba a bit of a big build-up, we’ve been quick to criticise him [in the past], but that was a moment there for him to say… listen, if you want to be the main man you’ve got to take that chance.’
He continued: ‘You can tell by his reaction. His first touch is excellent, but oh my goodness. Has to score!
‘Go across the goalkeeper, anywhere but straight at him. And his first touch is excellent, there you go, bang, oh my. It’s easy when you’re watching but Pogba, because his first touch was so good, he’s given himself that opportunity to go across the goalkeeper.
‘Huge moment in the season for Man United but credit to the keeper, he stood up, made himself big and reacted well. But that was the chance you’d be praying for before the game.’
United boss Solskjaer also felt his side had created enough big chances to take all three points and Pogba’s chance was the best of the match, though he praised the Frenchman’s performance irrespective of the miss and was very happy with his work off the ball especially.
‘I think Paul was absolutely brilliant today,’ he told Sky Sports.
‘We knew that he had to do a job today defensively, block and help us with [Andy] Robertson, and I thought he was excellent. And he should have got the goal his performance deserved.’
