Manchester United and Tottenham are reportedly eyeing up a move for Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak and the Premier League duo will be encouraged by the goalkeeper’s stance on a move to England. The Slovenian has previously addressed the possibility of a move away from Spain two years ago and admitted the “strength” of teams in the league makes a move tempting.

Tottenham have made Oblak their top target to replace veteran stopper Hugo Lloris, despite the fact the Frenchman recently penned a contract extension. The 35-year-old has already spent a decade in north London and it appears Spurs have one eye on the future.

United head coach Erik ten Hag is also said to be weighing up a move next summer as the Dutchman is harbouring doubts over David de Gea continuing as his No 1. Ten Hag brought in Martin Dubravka on loan from Newcastle to compete with the Spaniard amid concerns over his form in goal and the fact his contract expires next summer.

And the Slovenia international, rated as one of Europe’s best shot-stoppers over the past five years with 175 clean sheets in 352 appearances, has already made his feelings clear on a switch.

Oblak had been heavily linked with Chelsea before the Blues signed Kepa Arrizabalaga and then Edouard Mendy, while United have been long-term admirers – and he refused to rule out a switch when quizzed on the matter almost two years ago.

“The Premier League has strong teams,” Oblak told Spanish journalist Guillem Balague on YouTube in 2021. “Maybe the strongest. But I think in the end it is what the coach is asking of you. You listen to his instructions.

“You are one of the XI, so you do what he asks of you. All the players on the pitch are thinking like that. It doesn’t matter if it’s the Premier League, Italian league, Spanish league, wherever you go you need to do what the coach is asking you to do.

“I don’t know what the future will bring, but I am sure that in any league I would play I could play well. You never know what will happen in the future. Now I have been in Spain for seven years. Let’s see. I’m still young. Not so young anymore, but I still have some years in front of me.

“The most important thing for me is the hope that I do not suffer any injuries. Let’s see what the future will bring.”

However, any deal for Oblak is likely to result in a hefty transfer fee as his £200,000-a-week contract at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano runs until 2028 after signing a contract extension this year.

While Atletico are willing to listen to offers for the 29-year-old, he currently has a release clause of £104m (€120m) written into his contract. And Los Rojiblancos may be looking to spark a bidding war between Spurs and United to drive up the final price, while Chelsea may also enter the race as Graham Potter weighs up his goalkeeping situation.
