Notts County promoted in play-offs pen drama as Chesterfield manager can’t watch
Notts County have been promoted to the Football League after beating Chesterfield in the play-off final.
The Magpies twice equalised in the most dramatic of matches at Wembley, first forcing extra-time and then penalties which they triumphed on. Having been pipped to the National League title by Wrexham, they'll now be joining them in League Two next season.
It looked like it wasn't going to be their day in the capital when goalkeeper Sam Slocombe conceded a penalty inside the first five minutes. Chesterfield's Andrew Dallas stepped up and put them ahead.
County couldn't find a response until former Tottenham prospect John Bostock netted a leveller by sneaking a free-kick past Ross Fitzsimons in the Spireites' net with two minutes of normal time left.
They were behind again after less than three minutes of extra-time, however, as Armando Dobra's deflected strike flew past Slocombe.
Ruben Rodrigues drew his side back into once more with a bouncing effort after the break, with nothing to separate them after 120 minutes.
Boss Luke Williams brought on second choice shot stopper Archie Mair, 22, before the shootout – which proved to be an inspired decision.
He saved Darren Oldaker and Jeff King's efforts, giving Bostock the opportunity to claim victory. However, his panenka hit the bar and bounced back out.
Chesterfield boss Paul Cook couldn't watch as Joe Quigley put the pressure on by converting their fifth spot kick, but Cedwyn Scott – who had his stoppage-time pen saved in last month's defeat to Wrexham – avenged his previous miss to wrap up the win.
