Notts County have avoided an "incredible bottle job" after rescuing their play-off semi-final clash against Boreham Wood.

Luke William's side have enjoyed an incredible season in the National League, going toe-to-toe with Hollywood-back Wrexham, but it looked at one stage that they would not be joining the Red Dragons in the EFL next term.

Rattling in a staggering 117 goals throughout the 2022/23 campaign, the most of any side in National League history, Notts fell four points short of claiming the title, finishing on a whopping 107 points, enough to bank the championship in any other fifth-tier season.

The Nottingham-based outfit also finished 36 points clear of semi-final opponents Boreham Wood, who ended the season closer to the relegation zone than County. And, despite a monumental scare, Notts recorded a thrilling comeback victory at Meadow Lane.

Yet midway through the contest, at 2-0 down, it looked as if Notts had thrown away their chance of promotion and rival supporters were quick to label them "bottlers". "Some bottle from notts, could see it from a mile away," posted one fan. "I knew notts would bottle it hahahaha," laughed another.

"Notts County in the mud. Had a feeling they might bottle play-offs. Shaq Forde and Ryan Whitley killed their vibe," harked a York City fan. "Notts County incredible bottle job," stated a fourth.

Due to their firepower and incredible home record, losing only once at home all season, Notts were firm favourites to take the first available spot for Saturday's Wembley showdown but two goals late in the first half handed Boreham Wood a commanding lead.

The deficit was halved immediately after the restart when Aiden Baldwin rocketed home from 25 yards and Notts were given a guilt-edged moment to level the tie on 65 minutes, Ruben Rodriguez felled in the area for a spot-kick.

Having won the penalty, the Portuguese playmaker stepped up to take, only to see his scuffed attempt shepherded clear by Joe McDonnell, an ex-Notts keeper who joined yesterday on an emergency loan from Eastleigh.

Despite dominating the second period time seemed to be ticking away on Notts' latest promotion attempt. That was until the seventh minute of injury time. Baldwin again on the scoresheet to force the game into extra time.

In the dying minutes of extra time, Jodi Jones' slammed home into the top right corner to send County to Wembley.
