Norwich fan targeted by online abuse hailed for fundraiser that ‘has gone crazy’
Football Digest: Newcastle could be a Premier League title contender
A Norwich City supporter has been hailed for raising over £45,000 for charity after he was targeted by vile trolls on social media over the weekend. Nathan West received a barrage of abuse following his appearance in a video, in which he explained his plan for following the Lionesses in the Women’s World Cup final.
West was at Carrow Road on Sunday to watch his beloved Norwich face Millwall, a game which clashed with England’s match against Spain in Australia. In the video, he said that he would watch the first half of the World Cup final before switching his focus to the Canaries and listening to the second half in his earphones.
He was then subjected to a barrage of online abuse on X, formerly Twitter, before several others came to his aid by shutting down the trolls in the replies. It was then revealed that West had been raising money for Macmillan as he prepares to run his first half-marathon in Kent later this year.
His JustGiving page has since been inundated with thousands of donations, taking the total amount raised above the £45,000 mark. West’s charity work was highlighted on Wednesday by former BT Sport presenter and fellow Norwich fan Jake Humphrey, who insisted that he ended up having ‘the last laugh’ over those sending him abusive comments.

“The below video of Westy over the weekend was met with nasty trolls getting a thrill from online abuse,” wrote Humphrey. “Westy had the last laugh. They didn’t realise this passionate, kind-hearted guy was raising money for @macmillancancer. The fundraiser has gone CRAZY! Currently 8000 per cent over his target! Amazing!”
West had initially set a target to raise £500 for Macmillan via his fundraiser, which can be found here. His good work has not gone unnoticed by the club he supports, with the BBC reporting that Norwich winger Jonathan Rowe has offered him a signed shirt.

The 31-year-old, who has also been offered tickets to watch an England match at Wembley Stadium, said: “It’s been quite overwhelming. I’m amazed how quickly the positivity has come and I appreciate everyone’s donations.
“It’s gone global, I’ve been reading messages from all over the world. [The charity] called me yesterday and thanked me for fundraising and they can’t believe how crazy it’s got.”
West has also been made a community ambassador by Norwich, who promised him a celebratory phone call from a mystery player. He went on to thank Rowe for offering him a signed shirt, adding: “He is my hero. I kept telling people about him, he was injured last year and I said we’ve missed him. He’s on fire.”
