Match of the Day's historic episode without presenters, commentators, or analysis began without the iconic theme sounding out.

The whole country was eagerly anticipating to see what this moment of television history would be like. While everybody knew there would be no Gary Lineker, no pundits, no interviews, and no analysis, nobody was expecting the iconic intro to be completely omitted from coverage.

The show was not even introduced as 'Match of the Day' but as 'Premier League highlights' instead, before it hastily cut to the opening match of the afternoon which was Bournemouth's shock 1-0 victory over Liverpool.

"BBC you really are useless, my grandson could have done a better job," one senior viewer commented.

"MOTD strange. No titles. No theme tune. No commentary. Feels completely flat. Definitely an own goal by BBC," another added.

"I tuned in to see how they’ll do MOTD & they didn’t even play the theme tune & went straight to highlights of first match & then swiftly switched it off," one other furious viewer added.

"This replacement program for Match of the Day, premier highlights, is hilarious. No theme tune, no commentary. Lamer than GB News," wrote another, who even managed to cram in a dig at GB News.

It is currently unknown as to whether Lineker will return to Match of the Day. Their broadcast was the dramatic end of an extraordinary day in BBC history, which also saw flagship football programmes Football Focus and Final Score swapped for Bargain Hunt and The Repair Shop.

It is also a mystery as to what form Match of the Day 2 on Sunday evening will take.
