No 1 Chelsea target Julian Nagelsmann’s agent explains rejecting Blues

Julian Nagelsmann’s agent has opened up on the decision to turn down Chelsea following his dismissal by Bayern Munich, which has led the Blues down a path where they are set to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as their next head coach. When Graham Potter was sacked at Stamford Bridge and Nagelsmann became available, it was thought that he would naturally become the successor and take over in London.

However, amid links also to Tottenham after Antonio Conte was sacked, Nagelsmann may not end up at either job. Spurs links have been batted away and after initial contact between the German boss and Chelsea, the club are heading in a different direction having agreed terms with Pochettino.

Nagelmann’s agent, Volker Struth, has claimed that Chelsea called Nagelsmann shortly after he was sacked by Bayern but that the chaos at Stamford Bridge persuaded him to turn down their interest. Struth said to podcast Phrasenmaher: “I can confirm that Chelsea were quick to call (after Nagelsmann’s dismissal at Bayern Munich). There were some phone conversations.

“It was the right decision (by Nagelsmann) not to go there. It’s a club in troubled waters at the moment. And their transfer policy, spending a few hundred million euros, has raised expectations that need to be met. There were also some other issues. He was their number one (choice), that was our information. I believe it would have happened if he had wanted it.”

Chelsea have refuted those claims and their version of events is that while there was interest in Nagelsmann, he was never their first-choice target to replace Potter amid an exhaustive search that has taken over a month to conclude. Frank Lampard has since taken over on an interim basis but the issues at Stamford Bridge have only become more apparent.

Some of Nagelsmann’s concerns stemmed from the mass spending by Todd Boehly and co since taking charge, as the American ownership group have spent over £600million on new players in just two windows but are set to finish in mid-table having sacked two head coaches in Potter and Thomas Tuchel.

As a result, a fire sale is set to commence with the likes of Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang likely to headline the outgoings.

Despite the huge outlay over the past 12 months, many have pointed out that Chelsea’s lack of a goalscorer has been holding them back – Lampard recently claimed that the squad doesn’t have enough of a cutting edge.

Only Wolves, Everton and Southampton have scored fewer Premier League goals than Chelsea so far this season – something Pochettino will need to improve as the Argentine is set to take over at Stamford Bridge after Naglesmann’s rejection.
