Ex-Leicester City, Southampton and Watford boss Nigel Pearson claims to have fought off a vicious wolf pack in the Romanian wilderness. The 59-year-old ran into trouble while on a solo walking holiday and broke a wolf’s jaw as part of his effort to get away.
Pearson, who spent time at Shrewsbury Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough during his playing days, has garnered a reputation as a no-nonsense figure since transitioning into management.
He famously tore into a journalist while in charge of the Foxes back in 2015, calling him an ‘ostrich’ for being ‘absolutely stupid’ before storming out of a press conference. That fiery demeanour may well have got Pearson out of a sticky situation while out in the mountains.
While part of Stuart Pearce’s England U21 backroom staff in 2007, Pearson rewarded himself with a walking holiday in the Romanian wilderness.

He was supposedly warned by locals not to go wandering alone due to the wolves and bears that litter the forest, but the Nottingham-born hard man carried on regardless and soon found himself cornered by no less than five furry beasts.
“There were five of them,” Pearson told Sky Sports back in 2015. “What they do is that one goes for you and the others circle around until one of them can bring you down. What they essentially do is rip the throat out. I backed myself against a tree – I thought ‘I don’t want to get attacked from behind’. I was absolutely goosed by this point.”

After throwing himself in a bramble bush to hide from the attackers, Pearson supposedly took drastic action by breaking a wolf’s jaw and gauging another’s eye out. The approach worked wonders as the rest of the pack scattered, while Pearce himself has backed up the incredible story.
“Every summer [Pearson] used to go away on his own on a walking holiday,” he confirmed. “One year he went to Transylvania. Got the train and went out to Transylvania and was warned if he goes walking in the mountains there are wolves and bears that type of thing.
“He got surrounded by a pack of wolves, backed himself up to a hedge to stop them getting behind him and gouged one of their eyes out and broke another’s jaw and managed to get away. He said if they managed to get behind him they would have killed him.”
Those at Bristol City, where Pearson is currently the manager, presumably know already that Pearson is not to be messed with. But players may tread extra carefully upon learning of his brush with a Transylvanian wolf pack, in which he came out on top.
