Nick Powell thought ‘what the f*** am I doing here’ after signing for Man Utd

Manchester United flop Nick Powell thought 'what the f*** am I doing here' after signing for the club.

Powell was brought to Old Trafford by Sir Alex Ferguson as an 18-year-old in 2012. His 14 goals for Crewe Alexandra had seen him dubbed a ‘wonderkid’, but the step up to the Premier League giants backfired in disastrous fashion for the attacking-midfielder.

His lack of confidence and game time reinforced one another, making Powell more and more isolated from the rest of the squad.

And it ended up with the youngster, now 29, feeling like he did not belong in a dressing room among Premier League-winning stars.

Speaking to The Athletic, Powell said: “It was purely that I didn't feel like I was a United player and that was grinding away at me.

“I found it hard to believe I should be there. ‘I don't want to do this,’ I'd think. ‘I didn't come to Man United not to play.’ And yes, it did segregate me a bit because I was thinking, ‘What the f*** am I doing here?’ That was probably my biggest issue.

“I'd go home and try to forget it all. That's part of the reason why people get the perception I didn't care. I didn't want to bring it home because it would annoy me even more. So I'd play Call of Duty, PlayStation, things like that, just to forget about the fact I was not playing football.”

At-the-time United left-back and legend Patrice Evra raised the same criticism of Powell in his autobiography, saying: “He didn't integrate, wasn't part of the group and you had no idea what he was thinking as he looked through you.

"He was only a young lad, but you're not too young to be judged at United.”

The forward struggled to get playing opportunities at Old Trafford, making just three appearances under Sir Alex and three under Louis van Gaal, while David Moyes did not call on him at all.

Powell went on to have consecutive loan spells at Wigan, Leicester and Hull, which he deemed a “failure” on his part.

A permanent move to Wigan followed in 2016, where he scored 29 goals over three seasons. And after being released by Championship side Stoke at the end of last season, Powell has now signed for Stockport County in League Two.
