The match between Nice and Marseille descended into chaos midway through the second half when hundreds of home supporters stormed the pitch after Dimitri Payet was struck by a bottle. Kasper Dolberg had put the hosts in front at the start of the second half.
But Marseille were pushing for an equaliser causing Nice all sorts of problems.
Marseille were attacking towards the home end when they won a corner with tensions rising among some of the home supporters.
And there was concerning scenes when Payet appeared to be struck by a bottle thrown from the crowd.
The former West Ham star fell to the ground in pain before jumping back in fury and allegedly launched the bottle back.
Payet was then spotted throwing another bottle which had missed him earlier back into the crowd again before being held back by his team-mates and some Nice players.
But dozens of home supporters soon made their way down from the stands with stewards struggling to keep them at bay.
Some of Payet’s team-mates joined him in confronting the baying crowd with authorities failing to get a hold of the situation.
The fans soon broke through the barriers to start confronting the players in what soon turned into scary scenes.
Hundreds of supporters had made their way onto the pitch with the players being whisked away by security.
The match was then suspended with no clear sign on whether it would be resumed that evening with fans being asked to remain in the stadium.
It’s the second time this season that Marseille have been victims of missiles being launched from crowds.
Midfielder Valentin Roniger was caught in the face by a bottle thrown from a Montpellier fan while celebrating Payet’s goal.
“Giant kisses to the Montpellier fan who threw the bottle at me. Good night to that idiot,” the Frenchman captioned the photo with his lips puckered.
