Neymar will not play any further part in the World Cup group stage with Brazil’s team doctor refusing to give any further details on when the forward could be set to return. Brazil are already through to the last-16 following their 1-0 win over Switzerland.

They’ll still want to secure top spot in their final group match against Cameroon, who need to win to give themselves a chance of qualifying for the next round. But Brazil will have to do so without Neymar, as well as Alex Sandro and Danilo.

All three have picked up injuries in the opening group games, but Neymar’s ankle problem could cause issues in the knockout phase. Brazil’s team doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, confirmed that the trio will miss the game against Cameroon on Friday.

“Alex Sandro felt pains on the left hip region and was not able to continue the match,” he said. “He was re-evaluated on this morning. We ordered an image exam, an MRI, which revealed a muscle injury on his left hip.

“The athlete will not be able to be on the next match against Cameroon and will start treatment so that we can recover him as fast as possible. Danilo and Neymar continue their recovery process on their ankle injuries, each one with a different approach, because they are distinct injuries.

“This is important to emphasize. Neymar had a fever, but that is already under control and it does not interfere with the process of recovery of his ankle.

“On our daily meeting with the technical committee, we brief that these three athletes will not be available for the next match against Cameroon.” By finishing top of Group G, Brazil will likely avoid Portugal in the next round.

But they could still end up facing Uruguay, who need to beat Ghana to give themselves a chance of qualifying second.

Brazil will be hoping Neymar can be fit in time for the last-16 clash, which will take place on either December 5/6.
