Neymar could MISS a showdown with fierce rival Alvaro Gonzalez
Neymar could MISS a showdown with fierce rival Alvaro Gonzalez – the man who called him ‘trash’ and taunted him for being in Pele’s shadow – as the PSG star is ill with gastroenteritis on the eve of ‘Le Classique’ against Marseille
- Neymar could miss France’s equivalent of El Clasico against Marseille on Sunday
- The Brazilian forward missed training due to gastroenteritis and will be assessed
- He was set to continue his bitter feud with Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez
Neymar could miss Paris Saint-Germain’s clash with fierce rivals Marseille on Sunday, potentially also missing a reunion with bitter adversary Alvaro Gonzalez.
The star forward could not train due to gastroenteritis and PSG will assess his availability before the trip to Marseille.
His feud with Gonzalez started in September 2020, when the Brazilian was one of five players sent off, for slapping the centre-back’s head, in an ill-tempered 1-0 Marseille victory at the Parc des Princes.

Neymar also accused him of making racist remarks – although a French Federation investigation later cleared the Spaniard.
And he refused to apologise for the slap, admitting after the match: ‘My only regret is not hitting that a**hole in the face.’
PSG subsequently defeated Marseille 2-1 in the French Super Cup in January, with Neymar scoring a crucial 85th minute penalty to help Mauricio Pochettino win his first trophy as manager at the club.
Marseille’s Gonzalez replied by telling Neymar ‘my parents taught me to take out the trash’
Gonzalez then told Neymar that he will eternally be in the shadow of Brazil legend Pele
The feud continued on Twitter, with Gonzalez posting a picture of him grabbing Neymar’s head with the caption: ‘My parents always taught me to take out the trash. Go OM (Olympique Marseille) always’.
The 31-year-old also compared Neymar unfavourably to compatriot Pele, who won three World Cups.
But the former Barcelona forward could now miss another potential showdown with Gonzalez, with defenders Abdou Diallo and Timothee Pembele also set to miss out as they are isolating due to coronavirus.

Goalkeeper Keylor Navas (adductor) and central midfielder Ander Herrera (lack of match fitness) are also likely to miss out on the third occasion of ‘Le Classique’ – the French version of El Clasico – this season.
Marseille are in managerial turmoil, with former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas currently suspended after he offered to resign because of disagreements over the club’s ‘sporting policy’.
Olivier Ntcham arrived on loan from Celtic on transfer deadline day – a player Villas-Boas openly admitted he did not want or sign – leading Marseille to condemn his ‘unacceptable’ comments.
