Neymar contacted ‘world’s most beautiful footballer’ – and she wants his help

The 'world's most beautiful footballer' has been in touch with PSG star Neymar and hopes he can help build the women's game.

Ana Maria Markovic, 22, has shot to fame in recent months thanks to her stunning looks. When she's not starring for Swiss club Grasshopper and the Croatian national team, the forward is posing on Instagram for her 1million followers.

But Markovic doesn't aim to just promote herself but rather help her fellow female stars too. And she wants Neymar, who is one of the famous faces who has contacted her, to assist with that.

Speaking to 20Minuten, she said: "Of course I'm in contact with other footballers, we do the same job. Whether it's the male Grasshoppers players or international footballers, the exchange is always there – but only on a footballing basis.

"Neymar is an outstanding footballer. I hope that I can persuade him to support women's football and that he can also do his part off the field. Because the male footballers can achieve a lot with their reach on social media."

Should male stars be doing more to help the women's game? Let us know in the comments section.

Markovic is seeking equality as she believes women footballers are discriminated against more on social media than the men are.

"What makes the difference between men and women is, for example, when I show myself in a bikini on social media or when Erling Haaland [shows himself] in his swimming trunks," she continued.

"Erling almost certainly doesn't get the same sexist comments. We women are good at standing up for each other, but what I wish for is that men start standing up for us too.

"Men always talk about 'men of honour', but it would be really honourable if they stood behind us in such situations."

While it's Neymar who has been in her DMs, Markovic previously revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo is her favourite player, as well as Luka Modric and Ramona Bachmann as role models.

She's spent her career exclusively in Switzerland so far, but is open to a move in the future, eyeing up England as her destination. "I would be most interested in going to England later," she added.
