Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes ‘didn’t sleep for four days’ deciding January move

Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes claims he endured a series of sleepless nights while mulling over his move to St James' Park back in January.

The Brazilian was facing an agonising choice. Newcastle wanted him to spearhead their new Saudi-financed revolution, but they were teetering on the edge of relegation at the time and playing Championship football would have put a serious dent in his hopes of playing for Brazil at the World Cup later this year.

Besides he was loving life in Lyon, having established himself as one of Ligue 1's most exciting young talents, and wasn't exactly going to be short of suitors if he decided to stay put.

In the end, Guimaraes took the plunge and headed for Tyneside, but insisted that it was "one of the hardest decisions of my life".

"I think I went about four days without sleep," the 24-year-old told Globo Esporte.

"I’m not going to lie, I was afraid, yes. Even more so because the club was in the relegation zone. But after I got there and did my first workout, confidence went up again."

Guimaraes wasn't the only man through the door in January, but his arrival coincided with a surge in form for Eddie Howe's side and the threat of relegation was abated in a matter of weeks, and now the Brazilian says moving to Newcastle was "the best decision" he ever made.

Who should Newcastle buy this summer to partner with Guimaraes in midfield? Let us know what you think in the comments section.

"We ended up in 11th, a team that was second to last. The best decision of my life was to go to Newcastle, to the Premier League, I believe it may have been a differential in my call-ups too."

The midfielder, who only has only played six times for Brazil, is currently away on international duty and has friendlies against South Korea, Japan and Argentina coming up to convince manager Tite that he deserves to a place in the squad for Qatar.

If his form for Newcastle over the past few months is anything to go by, he's in with a damn good chance.
