Newcastle are apparently ‘wise’ to a transfer tactic being adopted by their Premier League rivals as they seek to escape relegation. Eddie Howe has already confirmed his first January signing in Kieran Trippier and could reportedly target more deals from abroad.

Trippier has arrived at St James’ Park from Atletico Madrid in a deal worth around £12million plus add-ons.

The 31-year-old had spent two-and-a-half years at the La Liga club but has returned to England to help Newcastle’s battle for safety.

It marks Newcastle’s first foray into the transfer market under their wealthy new owners.

In October, the Magpies were bought by a consortium majority-backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund. It means that they can spend vast amounts in January.

That is a unique advantage for Howe, whose side are 19th in the Premier League and have won just once all season.

And how they will approach the remainder of the transfer window has been made clear, with Newcastle apparently ‘wise’ to other clubs’ dealings.

According to the Independent, the Tyneside outfit are aware that their top-flight rivals do not want to sell their players to them. Premier League clubs have maintained a stance that they do not want to strengthen Howe’s ranks knowing the financial firepower they have.

That will leave Newcastle following a very different transfer strategy to Manchester City, whose 2008 takeover has been compared to the one completed by the consortium fronted by Amanda Staveley.

Between 2008 and 2011, City attempted to take the best players from all the sides competing with them for trophies.

The approach saw Carlos Tevez signed despite Manchester United agreeing to make his loan from West Ham permanent.

Samir Nasri arrived from Arsenal. Wayne Bridge was snapped up from Chelsea. Robinho was meanwhile signed from Real Madrid, who City wanted to challenge for the Champions League.

But Newcastle will not be able to follow that path. Instead, they could look to the foreign market more often after securing Trippier’s transfer from Atletico.

Lille defender Sven Botman has been widely linked. Defensive signings are a necessity given that Newcastle have conceded an incredible 42 goals in 19 league games.

Trippier fills the gap at right-back and Howe hopes that the former Tottenham star can tempt other high-profile players to join.

“It is a sign that the club has a huge pull. I’m not talking financially, either. Kieran hasn’t come for financial benefits,” boss Howe said after Trippier’s transfer was confirmed on Friday.

“He has come for the club and the longer-term vision. Hopefully other players from around the world will look at that and share his dream and vision.

“But without doubt, the signing was made easier by the new regime. There is a huge amount of positivity around the club right now. That feeling of change certainly helps.”
