- The defender is understood to be keen on a return to English football
Newcastle United will reportedly step up their attempts to sign Kieran Trippier in the January transfer window, with a lucrative offer set to be handed to the player.
The England international will be out of contract at the end of the season, and newly-rich Newcastle are hopeful of tempting his club Atletico Madrid into signing off a deal next month to recoup some cash.
Trippier, 31, will become the highest earning star at St James’ Park if he opts to swap the Spanish capital for north east England, according to TalkSport.
The current top earning star at the club is understood to be Allan Saint-Maximin, in the region of £90,000-per-week.
Newcastle are ready to make Kieran Trippier their top earner to persuade him to join the club
The former Burnley and Tottenham defender joined the LaLiga side from Spurs in 2019 for £20million.
Since, Trippier has gone on to become a key member of Diego Simeone’s squad, helping them to the Spanish title last season.
As recently reported by Sportsmail, the 31-year-old England international is high on Eddie Howe’s wish-list as the Newcastle manager views the full back as someone who can lead by example and lift those around him.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe values Trippier’s leadership and hopes to convince him to sign
Howe knows he needs leaders as a relegation battle ensues and hopes they can persuade Trippier to leave a Champions League campaign for a Premier League relegation dogfight.
Talks have been developing since November despite the fact Trippier is sidelined until January with a shoulder injury. The defender has six months left on contract at around £130,000-a-week but it is understood he will trigger another year’s option if he starts 20 games.
Trippier is open to a return to England, however, the price is still unclear with Atletico having pushed for over £25m last summer amid Manchester United’s interest.

Newcastle are also keen on Lille centre-back Sven Botman but are unsure whether he will commit to joining their project in January, as he is being courted by other clubs in less perilous league positions.
At present the Magpie sit rock bottom of the Premier League table, level on 10 points with Norwich having won just one match all season.
