Newcastle vs Southampton LIVE: Team news, line-ups and more ahead of Premier League fixture today
Newcastle welcome Southampton to St. James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon. The Magpies have won just one of their last 13 games in all competitions, a 2-0 win at Goodison Park last week. Callum Wilson scored twice to secure a crucial three points for Steve Bruce’s side, who sit 16th in the table – eight points clear of the relegation zone – following their recent awful run of form. In fact, Newcastle have turned it around on the pitch recently as they have pushed forward and showed attacking intent. In their last three matches, the Magpies have managed 56 attempts on goal – more than the previous seven matches combined.
Meanwhile, Southampton have plummeted since their 1-0 win against Liverpool with consecutive losses – including two home defeats and a crushing loss at Old Trafford last time out. The Saints were slammed 9-0 by the Red Devils, and manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said his team’s defeat to United ‘hurts even more’ than when they lost by the same scoreline to Leicester last season. Newcastle will hope to take advantage of Southampton’s battered confidence to get a win and climb the table.

Xhaka picks out Pepe with another incisive pass. The latter drills in a low shot, which takes a deflection and requires a reflex save from Martinez. Arsenal are knocking on the door.

Half a chance for Aubameyang. Again, Pepe is the creator, lifting a cross into the middle. Aubameyang manages to get his head to it, slightly awkwardly, sending his effort just wide. Smith Rowe was waiting at the back post, though, and might have been better placed to attack it.

Martin Odegaard makes his much-anticipated Arsenal debut. He replaces Cedric.
Villa make a change, too, sending on Trezeguet for Traore.

Villa work the ball patiently down the right. Traore plays a clever pass for Cash to run onto, but Pepe tracks him back well and wins the ball.
ASTON VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL (60’)
Another promising Arsenal move comes to nothing as Cedric sends a cross straight at Martinez. The away side look menacing when they come forward, though. Pepe, in particular, is giving Cash a difficult afternoon.

Arsenal need a goal, so who better to turn to than Aubameyang. He replaces Lacazette.
ASTON VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL (58’)
Saka swings a corner into the six-yard box and it flashes a cross the face of goal, without a touch from anyone. Lacazette is penalised for a foul on Martinez anyway.
ASTON VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL (57’)
Bellerin again finds space in a slightly more central position, driving forward and finding Saka, whose shot from a tight angle is blocked. It’s been a remarkably open start to the second half.
