Newcastle ‘tracking’ their own Gnonto as bargain £4.5m deal eyed
Cristian Stellini previews Newcastle clash
Newcastle United could pounce on a bargain transfer opportunity this summer due to a clause in the contract of Fenerbahce youngster Arda Guler. The highly-rated wonderkid could arrive in the Premier League as the next Wilfried Gnonto, with Leeds United’s cut-price transfer setting the standard so far this season.
The Whites swooped for Gnonto on deadline day last summer, bringing him to Elland Road from FC Zurich in a £3.8million deal. He was therefore expected to slowly work his way into the side, but upon being given a shot in the first team, fans demanded to see more.
The Italian international has notched five goal contributions in 19 Premier League appearances so far this term, with many tipping him to be the signing of the season, despite Leeds’ continued role in the relegation battle.
Newcastle could pull off a similar coup as Guler – one of the top-rated talents in Turkish football – reportedly has a contract clause that could see him leave Fenerbahce for a pittance this summer.

A Spor claim that the Magpies sent scouts to watch the 18-year-old in action against Istanbulspor on Monday. It proved to be a worthwhile trip as Guler scored either side of half-time in a thrilling 3-3 draw.
Like Gnonto, the youngster can operate in a variety of attacking positions, including out wide or through the middle. Fenerbahce are wise to his talent and tied him down to a three-year contract last season which, according to Haber 7, includes a complicated series of clauses.

The most important one for Newcastle states that if Guler plays less than 1,500 minutes in a season, his release clause will plummet to just £4.5m. The teenager has clocked 964 minutes so far this campaign and he must play the vast majority of the remaining minutes available to avoid Fenerbahce losing him for a cut-price fee.
Born in February 2005, back when Graeme Souness was in charge at St James’ Park, Guler continues to develop at a rapid rate with six goals and two assists across all competitions this term.
Newcastle have come on leaps and bounds under Eddie Howe and they are now heavily fancied to qualify for next season’s Champions League after demolishing Tottenham 6-1 on Sunday.
It remains to be seen whether Guler would be able to force his way into the first-team fold on Tyneside, given the range of options already at Howe’s disposal. If the Fenerahce star does end up surpassing the aforementioned minutes threshold, his release clause will reportedly be set at £17.8m.
