Newcastle suffer two quick blows in search for new manager to kickstart new era

Newcastle have been hit with a double blow in their search for a new manager.

The Magpies are still without a new head coach after the departure of Steve Bruce almost two weeks ago, with his former assistant Graeme Jones in temporary charge until a replacement is found.

Jones is a respected coach but unlikely to be handed the reins on a permanent basis. He has so far overseen a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace and Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Chelsea.

The club's new owners are taking their time to sound out Bruce's successor but will want to get someone in soon with the Magpies now six points adrift of Premier League safety.

Newcastle are reportedly struggling in their efforts to convince Erik Ten Hag to leave Ajax, as the highly-rated Dutchman is reluctant to swap the Champions League for a relegation scrap.

Ten Hag is currently in charge of an Ajax side flying high at the top of the Eredivisie table and their Champions League group, which contains Sporting Lisbon and Borussia Dortmund.

According to The Mirror, Newcastle's approach for the Dutch coach isn't helped by Barcelona's own search for a new manager after Ronald Koeman's departure.

"Will it be Champions League or Championship? That is the question that bothers Ten Hag," a well-placed source told The Mirror.

"Right now, he is top of the group with Ajax in the Champions League and he can be sure of taking them into the knockout stages in 2022."

Another option for the Magpies is Paulo Fonseca. However, a move for the Portuguese could be complicated by Tottenham if they decide to sack Nuno Espirito Santo.

Nuno could be sacked just 17 games into his tenure in north London after it emerged the club will hold crunch talks over his future.

Tottenham were close to appointing Fonesca in the summer but changed tack at the last moment, opting instead for compatriot Nuno.

Fonesca is among the favourites for the Newcastle job, but could be tempted back to Tottenham with the north Londoners much higher up the Premier League table.
